Meet your 2024 Men’s Club President – James T. Cagney

Jim was born in Buffalo and spent his teen years growing up in the Riverside area. After graduating in 1963 from Cardinal Dougherty High School, he worked in the vending department at the University of Buffalo, where he met Judy, the love of his life. Shortly thereafter, he joined the New York Army National Guard in 1965, where he served for six years. Following his service time, Jim enrolled at UB and graduated with two degrees, one in Business and the other in Psychology. After UB, he entered the sales field at 3M Business Products, Peter Frasse Steel, and then onto The Alling & Cory Paper Company, where he spent almost 29 years. He was a member of the Buffalo Club of Printing House Craftsmen and served as President from 1988-89. In 1996 he was honored as Craftsmen of the Year.

After retirement, Jim worked part-time as a sales rep for Sharp Printing. In 2005, he started his own business, All In One Communications, a Graphic Communications Brokerage Company.

During the COVID epidemic, Jim and Judy watched weekly Mass on TV and stumbled upon the Newman Center. After hearing the homilies and watching several interviews featuring Newman clergy/staff, they were hooked. When in-person Mass returned, they started attending 9 AM Mass and found the Newman Community very warm and welcoming, and where the phrase “All ARE WELCOME” is truly meant from the heart.

Wanting to become more involved in the Newman Community, Jim became more active and volunteered in many of the great ministries the Center offers. He was invited to join the Men’s Club early on and has truly benefited from the camaraderie and the wonderful things the club does socially and for others.

Finally, the Newman Center Men’s Christmas Fund drive has become the premier event of the club. In 2023, the club raised $7,000 in donations from the Newman Community. These funds were given to two outstanding organizations: Buffalo House of Hope, and Our Lady of Hope Church at Lafayette & Grant. Jim feels he is truly blessed to become your 2024 Men’s Club President and is looking forward to serving our community in that capacity.

How We Started

The Men’s Club started in 2008 when a bunch of men from the Newman Center were having coffee at Panera’s and somebody said we should start a club. Everybody said “good idea” and we elected Bob Denman as our first President (he was not in attendance) and we called it the Men’s Club. We had no rules, but we started doing things together and it grew from there.

Today we have 87 members. We work together on activities at the Newman Center and enjoy a strong sense of community — and also have a good time along the way!
