Oct 30, 2024

AMHERST, NY – Oct 29, 2024 – Prof. Massimo Faggioli, Ph.D., professor of Historical Theology at Villanova University, delivered a lecture titled, Pope Francis – From Vatican II to Synodality: Promises and Challenges.

Prof. Massimo Faggioli’s talk explored the evolution of synodality within the Catholic Church, beginning with the legacy of Vatican II, which introduced structural reforms and emphasized a more participative Church. He explained how Pope Francis has broadened the scope of synodality, involving laypeople and non-bishops in Church consultations. Faggioli highlighted Pope Francis’ vision for a Church that is open to dialogue, reflective of a living tradition, and able to meet global challenges in governance, liturgy, and inclusivity.

The talk also touched on issues such as the ordination of women and the role of LGBTQ individuals in the Church, showing that while these topics remain contentious, Pope Francis encourages their continued discussion. Faggioli noted that synodality brings the Church closer to the ideals of early Christianity, moving away from a hierarchical model to one rooted in shared discernment and adaptability. He concluded by emphasizing that synodality requires the Church to remain connected to Vatican II’s vision, adapting as a unified yet diverse community to address contemporary issues.
