Bankruptcy Settlement Impact on UBNC

Jun 15, 2025

This past week has been a challenging time for the diocese of Buffalo as parish families have come together to learn how all members of the diocesan family will need to extend our mercy in the form of economic relief to the survivors of abuse.

Many have asked how this will affect our Newman Center. While St. Joseph’s University parish has been asked to contribute from its investment reserves; the UBNC has no investment reserves, due to our recently being re-classified from being a department of the diocese.

Our community, however, has made a meaningful contribution to the bankruptcy settlement. The diocese has accepted the UBNC’s condominium (which had been used as our priest’s rectory) as our contribution to the settlement. The condo is for sale, and the proceeds of its sale will go toward the settlement. The settlement process will continue over the next 12-24 months before a final exit from Chapter 11 bankruptcy occurs.

Please continue to pray for those who suffered abuse, and that the love of our triune God will strengthen us as we work for a better future for our Church.
