Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a 40-day period of prayer, fasting, and penance leading up to Easter. It is characterized by the placing of ashes in the shape of a cross on the foreheads of the faithful as a symbol of repentance and humility.

When a priest places ashes on a person’s forehead during Ash Wednesday, he traditionally says either “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” (Genesis 3:19) or “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” (Mark 1:15)
